VIKINGS WITHDRAW FROM JUSTIN NORTHWEST SQT
In consultation with Coach DeLay the decision was made to withdraw from next Saturday's SQT. The reason we elected to withdraw is that Friday night is the spring scrimmage. To get the kids up and back out on the field in less than 12 hours to play three 7 on 7 pool games when already qualified is not necessary. This will give them the weekend off to rest and heal.
On Tuesday June 2nd at 6:30 pm-8:00 pm we will have 7 on 7 practice at Lamar on the grass fields. As this may very well be our ONLY practice that week (due to end of school) be SURE you keep that time available. Please note the start time of the SOUTHLAKE SQT on Saturday 6/6. We will depart Lamar at 11:00 am. The tournament traditionally is held in the afternoon so that players taking SAT test can finish and still make it to the tournament. We will send out detailed information on Southlake as we get closer to the tournament but typically we will have games at 1:00 pm/2:00 pm/3:00 pm. We will not advance after that as we have already qualified.
VIKINGS QUALIFY FOR A RECORD 18TH TRIP TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT!
On Saturday, in the first state qualifier weekend of the season, the Vikes took care of business and qualified for the 18th consecutive year. As you probably know Lamar is the only high school in Texas to qualify every year of the State Tournament. In a State as large as Texas (1400 high schools) where football is king to be the only school to accomplish this is quite a feat. Most of the current players were not even born when the Vikes qualified in the very first State 7 on 7 tournament in 1998.
Because of the weather the team had to compete at two different venues on the same day. We drove the 50+ miles to Wylie and played three pool games at Wylie East HS.
The first game was against the home team and the score was close most of the game until Wylie opened up a 12 point lead. With less than 5 minutes left the Vikes scored 14 points and got a key interception to prevail at the end 34-32. Great job of staying composed and playing together to get the job done. Extra point conversions in 7 on 7 are key and the final margin of two points was the Vikes getting their XP's!
The 2nd pool game was against Episcopal School of Dallas. Maybe the finish in the previous game distracted us because we did not play well on offense in the first half relative to the competition level. In what became a trademark of the day though, the Vikes made adjustments at half and played with more intensity down the stretch and won 41-14.
The 3rd pool game against Rowlett again saw the Vikes clamp down on the opponent in the second half with another interception and won 40-13 to finish 3-0 and win pool "C".
The team loaded up and quickly moved the 15 miles to Rockwall the actual tournament host site. The Vikes played the pool "D" winner the Keller Indians in the Qualifying Round. We scored every time we had the ball and played perhaps our most complete game of the day winning 60-27. That is the most points I recall us scoring in the qualifying round in my years of coaching.
The Championship Game would have been against Lindale HS from east Texas, the winner of Pools A and B. As is the case most of the time neither of us wanted to play this game (most schools are in spring football and there is no reason to risk injury). A coin flip decided the Champion and Lamar called it correctly and were crowned champions of the 2015 Rockwall State Qualifying Tournament.
Couple of take away's from my vantage point:

Couple of take away's from my vantage point:
- We have the talent to play with anyone IF we play focused for BOTH halves.
- Stayed together when playing from behind and kept our composure and got the W.
- Good job making and then executing 1/2 time adjustments. Dominated second half of each game.
- Kids learning that the "secret sauce" in 7 on 7 is: two defensive stops per half by our "D" and score every time on offense including XP's and you WIN.

CHANGE OF LOCATION FOR ROCKWALL POOL PLAY SATURDAY!
From Rockwall Head Football Coach: Weather has forced us to change
our pool play sites for the Rockwall SQT on Saturday.
The grass field at RHS will be
unplayable on Saturday. In addition, the threat of storms and subsequent
lightning delays on Saturday makes it a bad idea to stretch pool play out for
an additional two hours if we consolidate down to two sites. We will be moving Pool C (Arlington Lamar, Rowlett, Wylie East, ESD) to Wylie East High School.
We will be moving Pool B
(Poteet, Waxahachie, Grand Prairie, Sulphur Springs) to Wilkerson-Sanders
Stadium.
For Pool C at Wylie East, registration will be held on-site. Please bring money, liability waivers, and team rosters directly to Wylie East High School. This will save on excessive travel time for these teams.
Pool play times will be as originally planned. An updated list of pools and sites ALONG WITH DIRECTIONS are attached as a PDF ON THE LAMAR 7 ON 7 HOME PAGE (upper right tab). Below are links for directions.
NOTE: THE TRIP IS NOW ABOUT AN HOUR AND INVOLVES SOME TOLLS ALONG THE WAY. WE NEED TO LEAVE LAMAR HS AT 6:50 AM SATURDAY MORNING!!

ROCKWALL POOL AND MAPS
In order to attach a PDF with the maps and pool information you need to go back to the 7 on 7 home page www.lamarvikings7on7.com and click on the icon on the top far right called "PDF". You can then print the information for that week (see Rockwall PDF). I will try to have the current week information up by Tuesday each week assuming I receive it from the tournament by then.
Rockwall State Qualifying Tournament
Per below from the Host HS
(Rockwall) weather this week will dictate play. Fortunately we have been
assigned to Wilkerson-Sanders (Pool "C" ) so we will play on field turf regardless of
weather. It seats 8,300 so we should be able to fit our fans in the venueJ.
The biggest difference will be how much LONGER the tournament will take
IF the grass field over at RHS is eliminated due to weather. Attached is my
“marked up” pool sheet; clean pool sheet; directional map to Wilkerson and
direction map to Rockwall HS for semi-finals (may we need this map). Below is
direction link from Lamar:

CONDUCT AT STATE QUALIFIERS
On Saturday at a small
school state qualifier, two teams got in to it complete with coaches and fans
and it was a mess (police involved). Both teams disqualified including two time
defending D-II champions Graham. Have not heard an official word but the rule is
if two teams get in a fight they are DQ’d for the Day AND the Season including
the state tournament (if they had already qualified).
I WENT OVER THIS
CAREFULLY WITH THE KIDS YESTERDAY. POINTED OUT TO THEM AS THE ONLY STATE
QUALIFIER EVERY YEAR THEY HAD A “BULLS EYE” ON THEIR BACKS AND WHAT A TRAGEDY
IT WOULD BE FOR US TO LOSE THAT “ONE OF A KIND” QUALIFIER LABEL TO A FIGHT!!
Matt Stepp also
tweeted that at least one of these teams did NOT have a school coach there as
is required. Who knows if that would have mattered but it does not help that
they broke two rules in terms of the ultimate punishment handed out..
PRINCETON - 7 on 7 State
Qualifying got started today and the first DFW Division II Qualifier certainly
had its fair share of excitement as Princeton and Celina punched their tickets
to the 2015 7 on 7 State Tournament in College Station. The biggest story of the day may not involve the
two qualified teams, instead the focus shifts to two time defending Division II
champions Graham who along with Kaufman were disqualified from the tournament
during the final round of pool play due to a bench clearing melee.
An official decision has yet to be
handed down by the Texas State 7 on 7 Board of Directors on the status of
Graham and Kaufman, but the fact that both teams were disqualified and not
allowed to finish the tournament is not a good sign
Please take the time to read and download for reference the rules for 7 on 7. This will help us all understand the game better. You will note the highlighted areas in the rules are NEW for this year.

Weather this weekend
Like all sports teams we are juggling our schedule around the weather. Right now the plan is to have a very short walk-through practice Saturday AFTER regular football. On Sunday we will have a regular 7 on 7 practice at 2:00 pm at Cravens. If lightning is in the area I will decide about 1:00 pm Sunday if we need to move the practice to an alternative location (1701 E. Lamar Blvd). Nancy Buechele will do her best to keep you posted. THE SUNDAY PRACTICE IS VERY IMPORTANT so try to have your son there. This will be our last practice before our first STATE QUALIFIER on Saturday May 23rd.

Welcome to the Lamar Varsity 2015 7 on 7 Blog
Greetings Lamar 7 on 7 Fans,
We are less than two weeks from our first state qualifying tournament on Saturday May 23rd at Rockwall HS. As a team we have a good handful of practices under our belts and we are looking forward to getting the 7 on 7 season started. Right now the guys are in spring football so we are having short "mental rep" practices after the Saturday spring practices for 15-20 minutes to keep them thinking about 7 on 7.
Please take the time to click on the email box to the right center of this page and register. By doing this you will receive an email reminder each time I have posted on the 7on7 blog site. Pretty soon Nancy Buechele will be up and running on a program known as "mail chimp" which will provide you almost instant email updates on things like practice changes or bad weather information etc. Be sure Nancy and I have "good" email addresses on team players and family so everyone that wants to be kept updated will be.
As you probably know the Vikings are the only team in Texas to qualify for the state tournament every season for 17 years. We are very proud of that accomplishment and that is our first and primary goal this season-to qualify for the 18th consecutive year and participate in the State 7 on 7 tournament in July in College Station. We need your support and my coaching staff (Steve, Lawrence, Harrell, Julian, Tanner and Elias) thanks you for the opportunity to coach your sons.
VFND!
Jim Poynter
