VIKINGS ADVANCE TO QUARTERFINALS OF CONSOLATION BRACKET

After a tough start on Friday the Viking 7 on 7 team rebounded to make it to the final 8 of the 32 team consolation bracket on Saturday. It was only the 3rd time in 14 years that the Vikes have not advanced to the championship bracket.

Although we did not have the record that any of us wanted it was not from lack of effort or intensity by the team. I was especially pleased that after a tough day on Friday the players went back to work on Saturday morning and beat two good teams and nearly made it to the "final four". It showed real resilience on their part and that kind of approach this fall in regular football will be important.

On behalf of all of the 7 on 7 coaches I want to take this opportunity to thank the the parents for the opportunity to coach your sons this season. To see young men work this hard in the heat to make themselves better players is inspiring.

To the Viking players it was a lot of fun to get to know you better and to be your coaches. We can't wait to watch you this fall and to watch you academic progress at Lamar and beyond. VFND!

VIKES LEAVE FOR COLLEGE STATION

About 1:00 pm today the Viking 7 on 7 team will depart Arlington for College Station. We will check in to the hotel and then go have a short walk through practice to get the kinks out. We will then go eat dinner at "Chicken Oil" which is a long time tradition for the Vikes the night before the tournament. I would imagine that it would not be the favorite pre-game meal of most nutritionists but it seems to work for this age group!

On Friday we will begin pool play at 1:00pm. We will play every other game so game 2 should begin around 3:00 pm and the final pool game will begin around 5:00pm. We are in a challenging pool and the weather is going to be a factor for all the teams and their fans.

I will blog the results Friday as soon as I can.

RED BULL GAMEBREAKERS TOURNAMENT RESULTS

We elected to play in the sectional qualifier for the Red Bull "gamebreakers" even though we had already qualified for the State 7 on 7 Championship. The national red bull tournament and the state tournament dates conflict with one another.

It is always great to get "game speed" competition so even though the rules were quite different the level of play by all the teams at the Red Bull event was good and the weather was hot. Our goal was to continue to improve as a team and we did that although we started kind of slow. We made it to the quarterfinal round and lost a close one to Aledo. We beat Arlington High the game before and anytime you face a district rival such as AHS our kids are ready for the challenge. The Vikes overall record for the day was 3-2.

We have an open date Father's day weekend as this is about the 1/2 way point of the 7 on 7 season and everyone needs a bit of a break. We will practice twice next week and then participate in pool play at the Rockwall SQT on Saturday June 25th, which is the last SQT weekend for the season. After that we are scheduled to play in a "Qualifiers Only" tournament at Arlington Bowie on Thursday evening June 30th as a tune up to the State Tournament on July 15 and 16.

The Vikes season record stands at 15-5 to date. I am pleased with the effort and progress we have made. We have room to improve and we will focus on doing just that over the last month of the season.

VIKES WIN POOL AT COLLEYVILLE SQT

Despite playing without its starting QB Connor Berry, the
Vikes went 2-1 in pool play. Because Lamar qualified for the state tournament in last weekend's qualifer in Southlake they could not advance out of pool play this week. Connor Jennings played most of the way at QB and with almost no reps at QB during practice (he is a starting receiver) did a great job yesterday.

This Tuesday the Vikes travel to OD Wyatt HS in Fort Worth for the Red Bull sponsored sectional qualifying tournament. The winner advances to the national tournament in mid July. First games will begin at 3:00pm using a modifed scoring and rules system from regular 7 on 7 rules so it should be fun to watch.

The Vikings are now 11-3 on the season.

VIKINGS QUALIFY FOR RECORD 14TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR

Setting an all time team record in Texas high school football is never easy. Extending that record may be even harder. Despite that challenge, the current crop of Lamar Viking 7 on 7 players did just that on Saturday, going 4-0 to extend the state qualifying streak to 14 years. To put in perspective most of the current Vikes were 3 years old when the streak started and the players from the first team in 1997 are now 31 years old! After Saturday the Vikes are STILL the only team in Texas to qualify for every state 7 on 7 championship.

What makes me really proud is how and where we have accomplished this feat. EACH of the 14 years we have qualified on the road usually in one of if not the toughest pool in every tournament. This year was no exception as we traveled to Southlake and competed against three excellent teams in pool play and then a very good Stephenville team in the qualifying round.

On offense we were missing three good players Saturday. The kids did a great job of adjusting to changes in personnel packages. Jacob Wilhide volunteered to move over from his normal defensive position and he responded with 20 catches on the day! Connor Berry did a great job of leading the offense and making sure we got people lined up correctly pre-snap.

Defensively we were the best team in the tournament in any pool. In four games we surrendered just 63 points or just under 16 points per game while averaging nearly 31 points per game for a 15 point per game differential. Darrion Redman has 3 or 4 picks on the day and every player on the defense made plays.

We will now turn our focus over the next month to sharpening our skills on both sides of the ball and installing some additional plays and packages.

Sue Wilhide (team mom but really director of operations as far as I am concerned) has really done a great job of getting the parents to pitch in and make sure we have everything we need to perform as a team. I know I speak for all the coaches and players: THANK YOU parents for all you are doing on these hot days at the fields!

Next Saturday we will go to a Colleyville hosted tournament that begins at 1:00pm. It is being held at Oak Grove Park adjacent to Lake Grapevine. Come on out and watch the Vikes.

The Vikes pool includes Southlake Carroll, Arlington High and Arlington Martin. The Vikes pool games will be played on Fields 1 and 2. The 2011 Varsity 7 on 7 season starts in less than 3 weeks with a tournament at Keller High School on Saturday May 15th. The Vikes will enter two varsity level teams and a JV team in this tournament which will begin at 9:00am at Keller HS. If you are a fan of fast paced "all passing" touch football come on out and get an early look at the Vikes.

I will do my best to post Varsity scores after each tournament and of course look foward to your comments.

The State 7 on 7 Championship is actually going to be held a week later this year (July 15-16) so we will depart on Thursday July 14th for College Station. I have also accepted an invitation for us to play in the “invitation only” Red Bull tournament on Tuesday June 14th in Fort Worth.

We have accepted an invitation to play in a Holiday 7 on 7 Tournament at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on Thursday Dec. 30th. More details will follow but you can go to http://footballminicamps.com for more information including spectator ticket information (there is a charge).

VIKINGS FINISH TIED FOR 5TH AT STATE TOURNAMENT

Yesterday the Vikings advanced to the elite 8 before losing a close game to Dawson 31-27. The Vikes led 20-12 in the middle of the first half but were only able to score one more time the rest of the way. The Vikes 4 point loss was the only close game of the final 4 games as all of the others were 2 TD or greater victories.

With a 5-1 state tournament record and advancing to the round of 8 the 2010 Vikes are Tarrant County and Arlington 7 on 7 Champs for 2010. In the past 4 years the Viking 7 on 7 teams have finished:

"It is always disappointing to get this deep in the tournament and not quite get the brass ring said Jim Poynter, Lamar's Head 7 on 7 Coach for the last nine years. Having said that, anyone who has seen the level of competition in this 64 team tournament and certainly anyone who has played or coached in it, knows that it is a huge accomplishment to be a "top ten" team at College Station. To have done that 5 of the last 9 years is a feat unmatched by any other high school in Texas. It is almost taken for granted that Lamar will win its pool and advance to the Championship Bracket because we have done so 11 of the 13 years. To give folks some idea of how hard it can be, last years two state finalist teams (Cy Fair and RR Stony Point) did not even make it out of pool play this year.

I am so proud of the 2010 team; they had a target on their back as the only team to qualify all 13 years. Everyone in the state is aware of that and they all want to knock off the top dog. This group just missed a final four appearance so they really stood up to the challenge and I think it will serve them well in fall football. This is a great group of kids on and off the field.

I want to take a moment and thank the 7 on 7 coaches, Lamar football coaches, parents and other volunteers that make Lamar 7 on 7 what it is: the top 7 on 7 team in the state of Texas year in year out. Great job Vikes!

VIKES WIN POOL

The Vikings kept their consectutive wins streak alive yesterday going 3-0 in Poll play action in College Station at the State 7 on7 Championship. The Vikes have won 17 games in a row this season. Saturdaay morning the Vikes will play Copperas Cove at 9:00am in first round play of the 32 team championship bracket.
"The kids competed hard all three games, said Viking Head Coach Jim Poynter. Cy Falls is an outstanding team and both Montwood and Madison had talent as well. We made a few stops on defense in each game which is important at this level in 7 on 7. Offensively we averaged just over 36 points a game and more importantly spread the ball around to a lot of different receivers. We will have to be on our "A" game on Saturday as well in order to advance. Copperas Cove is very athletic paticuarly on defense".

Lamar is now 35-10 in State Tournament Play since 2002. The Vikes have now advanced to the Championship Bracket in 11 of the 13 years of the tournament.

VIKES SWEEP POOL PLAY IN TYLER

The Vikes made the early morning trip worth it as they went 3-0 in pool play. Missing 7 players who have started this year and departing at 4:45 am were not enough to stop the Vikes from winning all three games including a 40-27 victory over the host school Tyler Lee in the opening game of the day.

VIKINGS QUALIFY FOR 14 TH YEAR IN A ROW!

On Saturday the Lamar Viking 7 0n 7 team did what no team in the state of Texas has ever done as they qualified for the State 7 on 7 Championship for the 14th consectutive year. With two qualifer dates remaining Colleyville Heritage must finish in the top two of one of those tournaments or the Vikes will stand alone out of 1300+ high schools in Texas.

"As impressive as this accomplishment is by this year's group of Vikings, what really makes it special is that in each of the 14 years we have qualified on the road", said Jim Poynter, Arlington Lamar's head 7 on 7 coach for the last 8 years. "It is no secret that each tournament "host" school puts themselves in an "easier" pool in order to have a better chance to qualify. We have always qualified on the road and usally in a tough pool, which we like. It toughens us up for the State Tournament, Poynter continued.

Yesterday, the Vikes went 4-0 and finished in a tie for first with the host Southlake Carroll Dragons out of the 16 teams entered. Due to the afternoon start the teams agreed beforehand not to play the championship game as it has no bearing on qualifying. The top two finishers in each qualifer advance to the state tournament July 8-10th in College Station. The scores for the Vikes games:

DENTON STATE QUALIFIER

We have to be in Denton for registration by 7:00am sharp this Saturday June 5th. That means everyone needs to be at Lamar no later than 5:45am. We will pull out just before 6:00am to make the trip to Denton. It is supposed to be over 100 degress this weekend.

LAMAR TIED FOR 3RD AT BOWIE STATE 7 ON7 QUALIFIER

Playing less than 12 hours after the spring football scimmage, the Viking 7 on 7 team managed to advance to the semifinal round of the Bowie hosted state qualifier today. Playing in a pool with rivals Arlington High and Arlington Martin the leg weary Vikes still won their pool.

Lamar 27 Martin 13
Lamar 32 High 26 (Lamar was down at the half 20-6 but roared back to defeat their rivals)
South Grand Prairie 39 Lamar 34

Lamar wins the Pool 2-1

In the Championship Bracket the Vikes lost 33-26 to Stephenville who along with host Arlington Bowie qualified for the State Championship in College Station in July.

It was a gutty effort by the Vikes given what took place the night before. The kids were tired and sore but still managed to come within a score of qualifying for the state tournament.

Next weekend the Vikes travel to Denton to play in another qualifier.

Arlington Bowie Host for 1st State Qualifier

Tomorrow (Saturday May 29th)the Varsity Navy 7 on 7 team will compete in its first state qualifying tournament of the year. Two other Lamar teams will compete in the JV competition. The Varsity tournament is at Bowie HS and the first game is at 9:00am. In the Vikes pool are:

Arlington Lamar
Arlington Martin
Arlington High
South Grand Prairie

The top two finishers in the championship bracket in the afternoon will qualify for the state tournament in July in College Station.

Please come out and support the Vikes. Bring a hat, sunblock and plenty to drink as it will be hot tomorrow!

There is no practice during the week since we have regular spring football underway. We will practice this coming Saturday (22nd) from 9:00-10:45am at Shackleford Jr. High. This will be our last practice before our first State Qualifying Tournament at Bowie the following Saturday so make every effort to be at practice.

The Vikes entered two varsity and a jv teams in the Keller tournament Saturday which allowed all the 7 on 7 team members to get some work against other high schools.

Both the varsity teams won their respective pools. The Gold Varsity team pool championship was impressive as just 13 players were on the that team and many teams carry up to the maximum of 20 players. The Varsity Navy team averaged nearly 42 points per game for the tournament while surrendering 31 ppg. Scores for the Varsity Navy team were:

Lamar 52 - Birdville 45
Lamar 46- Byron Nelson High 21
Lamar 41- Colleyville 24

In the Championship Bracket Lamar lost to Gilmer 34-28 to finish the day 3-1.

Since the players are in regular football spring drills, the only varsity 7 on 7 practice the next two weeks is Saturday May 22nd at 9:00 am at Shackleford Jr High.

Reflections From Your Coach...

Having lost in the final seconds three years in a row very late in the
State Tournament could make one feel a bit snake bit. As deeply
disappointed as we all were yesterday in the loss to Cy Fair, I would
like to add some perspective to what has occurred in these years.

It is difficult to even qualify for the state championship. Just 96
teams out of some 1400 high schools in Texas make it to the large/
small state tournaments. The Vikings have now qualified for all 12
championships and amazingly have advanced from Pool Play to the
Championship Bracket 11 of those years! To give you some perspective
on this achievement, last year's state champions and winner of the
Addias national tournament, the Richland Rebels, did not get out of
Pool Play this year! The last three years we have tied for third twice
and 5th this year. It is natural for all of us to hurt after being SO
CLOSE to winning the state title the last three years. But that
disappointment has to be offset by realizing we are the only team in
Texas over the last three years to play at such a consistently high
level. It is my hope that all Viking fans will salute this tremendous,
consistent level of excellence and effort by our football players!

The other thing I would like to do is share with u one of the
"secrets" of our program's success. Their names are Lawrence Idiata
and Harrell Hicks,These two former Vikes have coached the defense the
last three years and I am confident we put the best defense on the
field each year due to them. Folks, these are 20 year olds working for
no pay I.e volunteers, giving back to their former school and our
local community. Please join me in thanking these wonderful young men.
We also had 4 student coaches thus year: Julian Steward. Quen Jones,
Michael Poynter and Travis Smith who did a great job! My right hands
for a number of years have been Steve Villareal and Onzo Bennett. I am
convinced we have the best coaching staff and certainly the most caring.

Finally, many thanks to Shawna Mayberry who served as our tireless
team mom and the many parents that lugged coolers and tents or washed
shirts or made sandwiches for the Vikes this year.

Vikings, it was an honor to be your Coach.

State Tournament Recap from Coach Poynter

The Lamar Vikings advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 64 team
large school state tournament Saturday in College Station on the
campus of Texas A&M. The Vikes narrowly missed an historic "three
peat" as no school in the 11 year history of the tournament has ever
reached the final four three consecutive years and it could not have
been any closer.

After beating City and District rival Arlington High in the 2nd round
of championship play 35-26, the Vikes advanced as one of the final
eight teams and the only Tarrant County team still playing. Arlington
high was ranked 3rd coming into the tournament but the Vikes sent the
Colts home. Coaches Ed and Scott Peach were there to watch the game.
In the quarterfinals just three north Texas remained: Coppell, DeSoto
and Arlington Lamar. The Vikes played Cypress Fairbanks from the
Houston area in one of the most fiercly contested 7 on 7 games in
recent memory. Cy Fair got the ball to start the game and the two
teams traded touchdowns most of the way.

The Vikes appeared to have stopped Cy Fair on three seperate occassions
on 3rd or 4th down in the 2nd half only to be flagged for interference
each time. Despite that, the Vikes got the ball back with about a minute
remaining and drove down to about the ten yard line.

With about 10 seconds left Lamar connected for what appeared to be
the game winning touchdown but the play was whistled dead for "four seconds".
The Vikes managed to get one more play off as the horn expired
but did not score and fell 45-40.

Lamar finished the Championsip 5-1 and tied for 5th place. The last 3
years the Vikings have tied for 3rd twice and 5th once, easily the
best cumulative showing of any team in Texas.

The Vikings won the second game over Houston Stratford 26-19 and the third game over Pearland Dawson 28-27 to sweep the pool 3-0 on a very hot day in College Station. The Vikes are now in the Championship round of 32 teams which begins at 9:00am Saturday.

Lamar goes 3-0 after beating Dawson 28-27

The Vikes earlier had beaten Cedar Park and Pearland.

Now as one of the few 3-0 teams in the competition,
the Vikes take a deserved evening break.

By the way The Arlington Colts end up 3-0 as well...

Friday Morning

Kids can sleep in until 8:45 this morning.
At 10:00 CoachPoynter will register the team while they eat breakfast and get their stuff together for the day.

Departure to the fields from the hotel is planned for 11:40 am.
The first game is scheduled for 1:00 pm.

The weather will be a real factor for the next 2 days.
We have been providing the players with a 32 oz sports drink every evening since Monday to keep them hydrated.
We have 3 tents, cases of water and ice cold towels on site.
We have one of our recent Lamar grads and team student trainers on the trip to tape ankles and watch for signs of heat related stress in our athletes.
Coach Poynter will report back after each game with game results/score...
Also watch for a detailed report at the end of the day.

The team arrived in College Station around 5 pm.

Short practice on the actual game field at A&M Consolidated HS then out to dinner.

Our Traditional Thursday night dinner is at a local place called Chicken Oil... an easy place to take a party of 40 in their work out clothes!

Team meeting to go over our schedule and team rules. Some free time in the hotel before lights out at midnight.

The Vikings traveled to Tyler Saturday and ran their winning streak to
14 games in a row with three victories Saturday. As expected, the
third game against Tyler Lee was a very competitive game with both
teams playing very well. The difference was the Viking defense forced
three possession turnovers and Lamar prevailed 42-35. This was a
rematch of the State Quarterfinal game of a year ago that was also
tightly contested and also won by the Vikes.

In the first game Lamar defeated Dallas Conrad 27-7; in the second
game the Vikes beat Longview Pine Tree 35-13.

Next week the Vikes will be off from tounament action and will begin
preperation for the State Tournament July 10-11th in College Station.

I want to mention to everyone what a super job our student and parent
assistant coaches are doing this year. Lawrence Idiata and Harrell
Hicks both played for me and have now coached for two seasons. Julian
Steward and Quin Jones just graduated from Lamar and were key players
on last summer's state semifinalist Lamar team. The 4 of them run our
defense. On offense, son Michael Poynter and like son Travis Smith are
likewise doing a great job and have really been instrumental in our
success. Great job all u guys! Steve Villareal has coached with me for
a number of years and does a great job every year. Brian Bader stepped
up to the plate and took on our Gold team and has done a great, great
job as well. Thanks to all of u for your volunteered time and effort.

The Lamar Vikings qualified for the State 7 on 7 tournament for the eleventh time in eleven years last Saturday winning the Waco Midway State Qualifier. The Vikings along with Colleyville Heritage who also qualified Saturday at their own tournament, are the only two high schools in the State to qualify each year of the State 7 on 7 tournament’s eleven year history. The Vikes went 5-0 on the day over the following teams:

1st game: Lamar 41 Lampasas 13
2nd game: Lamar 35 Vista Ridge 28
3rd game: Lamar 33 Belton 14
4th game: Lamar 40 Austin High 28
Championship Game: Lamar 25 Bastrop 20

“The kids played well and we were able to get some really good experience for some of our younger players”, commented Coach Jim Poynter who is in his 8th season as the Vikes Head Coach. “We were missing three of our starters and should have those kids back in the next two weeks and that will give us some additional depth” he continued.

The Viking Gold Varsity team will travel to Keller this Thursday (3:00pm start) and the Navy team to Southlake (1:00 pm start).
