VIKES DEPART FOR COLLEGE STATION TODAY

The kids put in the necessary work this week at practice and we are ready to go down to the State 7 on 7 tournament and compete. In thinking back over the 59 games I have participated in at State as the Head Coach for the Vikes there are a couple of things that I am really proud of:

* Viking players have always traveled well. We stay at the same hotel year after year because both parties treat the other with respect. They really do ACT like they belong at State.

* We play hard all of the time. With just a few exceptions we advance to the Championship bracket on Saturday which means we finished 1st or 2nd in Pool Play. So not only have we made it to the State tournament a record 18 years in a row but we do something with it when we get there. Four trips to the final 4 and two more to the quarterfinals surely attests to that player effort.

* Not only are the Vikes the only team in the State of Texas to qualify all 18 years but we have accomplished that feat ON THE ROAD every single time. Can you imagine if the Cowboys or TCU played only "road games"? We are never put in an "easy" pool as most host schools do for themselves in order to increase their chances of qualifying in their own tournament. By doing it the hard way on the road we are more ready to take on the quality of opponent in College Station.

We have a great challenge in front of us the next few days. There are a lot of talented teams and players to contend with. To narrow it down from 64 teams to a State Championship requires incredible talent, effort and a bit of luck. I promise we will give it our VERY BEST. VFND.

VIKES TURN ATTENTION TO 7 ON 7 STATE TOURNAMENT

After finishing the "regular" season 13-4 we will now start our preparations for the state tournament in College Station 7/10-7/11. Attached under the PDF tab on the home page is information on pool play and a roster of the 2015 Viking team that will compete at State. As was our intention this season we chose to limit our weekly practices to just one and compete each Saturday in pool play against other teams. This let us get 17 games under our belt which is more than most teams, as many elect to sit out SQT's after they qualify. We feel like playing at game speed against other teams all season gives us an advantage when we get to College Station. Most of this Lamar team has participated in at least one previous state tournament and our coaching staff has been there perhaps more that any other. We will take off this week leading into the 4th then pick up with several big practices Monday-Wednesday of next week prior to departing on Thursday.

As is the intention of the State 7 on 7 Association in the "drawing" for pool opponents each team plays against teams from other parts of the state. Humble is located just north of Houston, Stratford is in Houston proper and Coppell is up the street here in the Metroplex.

Lamar qualified on 5/23 at the Rockwall SQT. Lamar has qualified for state a record 18 straight times.

Atascocita (Humble):  Qualified on 6/20 at the Tyler SQT. They have qualified for state 2 times.

Houston Stratford qualified on 6/20 at the Cougar SQT. Stratford has qualified for state 13 times. In 2007 Stratford defeated Lamar in the state semi-finals 35-31 behind current NFL star QB Andrew Luck.

Coppell qualified on 6/12 at the Marcus SQT. Coppell beat Lamar 14-12 in a time shortened game on 6/20. Coppell has qualified for state 9 times.

I will post more later as time permits on our pool opponents. This group of Vikes has talent and with the preparation we have and will put in prior to arriving in College Station I expect us to compete very favorably.

VIKES GO 3-0 AT THE MIDLOTHIAN SQT

The Vikes got right back to form this past Saturday winning all three pool games. We played with 7 varsity players not available which was a challenge in putting together offensive and defensive combinations. In spite of being somewhat short handed the players responded and showed their athleticism and flexibility in winning all three games. Scores:

Lamar 41   San Antonio Warren 24
Lamar 40   North Crowley  32
Lamar 40   Wylie East 32

At the state tournament in a couple of weeks it will be important for us to be able to play all 20 players at a high level and in some cases in multiple positions. Saturday demonstrated we are capable of doing that.

VIKES TO PLAY AT HOME THIS SATURDAY

Although Arlington Bowie is hosting this Saturday's SQT there will be a "Qualifiers Pool" located at Lamar on Cravens Field. There will be 5 teams in the pool who have previously qualified for the state tournament so the competition will be good in each game. The Vikes will play 4 games on Saturday with the first game scheduled for 9:00 am. As soon as the host school issues a game schedule I will post it here. Players need to be at Lamar in east parking lot by 7:45 am Saturday.

Practice Tuesday night at Cravens at 6:30-8:15 pm. There could be weather in the area Tuesday. The best way to get up to the minute information is via our twitter account @lamar7on7   please follow us if you have not already done so. Remember we practice unless there is lightning in the immediate area.

VIKES WIN 2 OF 3 AT FLOWER MOUND MARCUS SQT

We started out slow but finished the day very strong with a dominating victory over an always talented Desoto team.

Scores:  Game 1: 20-26 Loss to the Colony
Game 2: 31-30 Win over Lone Star Frisco in o/t
Game 3: 48-19 Win over Desoto

The Vikes are 9-1 this season in State Qualifiers. While that is obviously a great record we have had nothing to achieve in the last couple of qualifiers as we are already qualified. That makes it harder to get "up" for every team in every game. It was a good wake up call for us to get beat by a team that was not as talented as we are in the first game Saturday. The Colony out played us on both sides of the ball and deserved to win. We played better in the second game and won in overtime. In the 3rd games against one of the most athletically talented programs in the State year in/year out we played our most complete game of the season. The Viking "D" shut out Desoto and their QB who is committed to Ohio State in 2016. Just as impressive our "O" scored TD's on 7 out of 7 possessions and coverted 6 of 7 extra point attempts. The take away for us is that when we want to we can be as good of 7 on 7 in the State-so the test will be for us to continue to play as we did in the last game going forward.

We have a really good test this coming Saturday as all of the teams in our pool have already qualified for State. We will play 4 games against good competition AND THE GAMES WILL BE AT LAMAR so come out and watch!

SHANE BUECHELE NAMED TO ELITE 11 FINALS

After traveling to the campus of USC in Los Angeles last weekend for the Elite 11 semi-final round  Shane "made the cut" from 30 outstanding QB's from all over the nation down to the group that will travel to Oregon in early July to compete in the finals. While on the field "skills and drills" are certainly a component of the last two competitions, much time is spent on life lessons (leadership; social media; giving back to community etc.) The Elite 11 organization understands that this select group of young men are "leaders" and "influencers" in their local community and that this is chance to help them develop skill sets that will let them effectively lead now and in the future when football is over. So Shane we are proud of your efforts to date and wish you the best at the finals! VFND!

Vikes go 3-0 at Southlake SQT

Nice job overall by the Vikings Saturday as we got some good work done in the heat playing back to back games at 1/2/3:00 pm. I was particularly pleased with the play of some of our younger and role players Saturday-we learned a lot as a coaching staff about some of the kids-remember we are still getting to know them as a group. Our offensive execution efficiency was very good and our average defensive stops per game ratio of 3.3 with a goal of 4.0 was decent too. Our goal is to score every time we have the ball on offense and to get two stops per HALF defensively.  We have not played any elite teams yet so our challenge is to push ourselves to play to our potential and not to the competition. We cannot let teams "hang around"-we have to play with higher intensity from start to finish.

The next three tournaments and practices are very key to what kind of success we will have in College Station. This group has a lot of potential-it is our job to identify the 20 players (travel limit) that can consistently play at an elite level as a group in the State Tournament. State is a grueling 2-days with up to 8 games against very strong competition. The key is to be able to call on all 20 players to make plays when needed.

That week we will have three practices (7/6, 7/7, 7/8) prior to our departure to College Station on Thursday July 9th. The new schedule is attached on the front page of the web site. DIRECTIONS AND POOL PLAY LOCATION MAPS FOR SOUTHLAKE

A map/directions from Lamar to Southlake Carroll SR. HS and the Viking pool play specifics are now posted under the PDF tab on the web site.

LAMAR POOL PLAY GAMES AT SOUTHLAKE SQT

We will meet at Lamar in the east parking lot a little before 11:00 am on Saturday to travel to Southlake to play in the SQT. The late start is due to SAT testing around the country. PLEASE make sure that Nancy or I know by 6/2 (Tuesday) if you are taking the test and will you be meeting the team in Southlake in time for pool play. DO NOT RUSH THROUGH THE SAT TEST-MUCH MORE IMPORTANT IN YOUR LIFE THAN ANOTHER 7 ON 7 TOURNAMENT! We are in Pool "B" on Field 3. Our first game is at 1:00 pm; second at 2:00 pm and 3rd and final game at 3:00 pm. We cannot advance out of pool play since we are already qualified for the state tournament.

Because we qualified early we will be using the 4 remaining state qualifiers as a major "practice" each week. This gives us full speed reps against other teams and allows us as coaches to further evaluate the possible players for the 20 man roster for the State Tournament. This week Shane Buechele will be in southern CA to compete for a spot on the national Elite 11 QB team. This is a great honor and we wish him well! Chance Fuller will get 3 games of varsity experience this weekend and we are all excited to watch him compete and grow as a QB!

We are going from cool wet weather to a tournament in the middle of the day this Saturday with the high expected to be in the low 90's. CRAMPS, DEHYDRATION AND SUNBURN (OR WORSE) is a real possibility as we all adjust to the suddenly hot weather. Starting TODAY players, coaches and fans need to INCREASE their intake of fluids. As you know by Thursday or so it is too late to help hydrate for Saturday.  So drink and get out those hats, sunblock and bug spray for Saturday!

VIKINGS WITHDRAW FROM JUSTIN NORTHWEST SQT

In consultation with Coach DeLay the decision was made to withdraw from next Saturday's SQT. The reason we elected to withdraw is that Friday night is the spring scrimmage. To get the kids up and back out on the field in less than 12 hours to play three 7 on 7 pool games when already qualified is not necessary. This will give them the weekend off to rest and heal.

On Tuesday June 2nd at 6:30 pm-8:00 pm we will have 7 on 7 practice at Lamar on the grass fields. As this may very well be our ONLY practice that week (due to end of school) be SURE you keep that time available. Please note the start time of the SOUTHLAKE SQT on Saturday 6/6. We will depart Lamar at 11:00 am. The tournament traditionally is held in the afternoon so that players taking SAT test can finish and still make it to the tournament. We will send out detailed information on Southlake as we get closer to the tournament but typically we will have games at 1:00 pm/2:00 pm/3:00 pm. We will not advance after that as we have already qualified.

VIKINGS QUALIFY FOR A RECORD 18TH TRIP TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT!

On Saturday, in the first state qualifier weekend of the season, the Vikes took care of business and qualified for the 18th consecutive year. As you probably know Lamar is the only high school in Texas to qualify every year of the State Tournament. In a State as large as Texas (1400 high schools) where football is king to be the only school to accomplish this is quite a feat. Most of the current players were not even born when the Vikes qualified in the very first State 7 on 7 tournament in 1998.

Because of the weather the team had to compete at two different venues on the same day. We drove the 50+ miles to Wylie and played three pool games at Wylie East HS.

The first game was against the home team and the score was close most of the game until Wylie opened up a 12 point lead. With less than 5 minutes left the Vikes scored 14 points and got a key interception to prevail at the end 34-32. Great job of staying composed and playing together to get the job done. Extra point conversions in 7 on 7 are key and the final margin of two points was the Vikes getting their XP's!

The 2nd pool game was against Episcopal School of Dallas. Maybe the finish in the previous game distracted us because we did not play well on offense in the first half relative to the competition level. In what became a trademark of the day though, the Vikes made adjustments at half and played with more intensity down the stretch and won 41-14.

The 3rd pool game against Rowlett again saw the Vikes clamp down on the opponent in the second half with another interception and won 40-13 to finish 3-0 and win pool "C".

The team loaded up and quickly moved the 15 miles to Rockwall the actual tournament host site. The Vikes played the pool "D" winner the Keller Indians in the Qualifying Round. We scored every time we had the ball and played perhaps our most complete game of the day winning 60-27. That is the most points I recall us scoring in the qualifying round in my years of coaching.

The Championship Game would have been against Lindale HS from east Texas, the winner of Pools A and B. As is the case most of the time neither of us wanted to play this game (most schools are in spring football and there is no reason to risk injury). A coin flip decided the Champion and Lamar called it correctly and were crowned champions of the 2015 Rockwall State Qualifying Tournament.

Couple of take away's from my vantage point:

  • We have the talent to play with anyone IF we play focused for BOTH halves.
  • Stayed together when playing from behind and kept our composure and got the W.
  • Good job making and then executing 1/2 time adjustments. Dominated second half of each game.
  • Kids learning that the "secret sauce" in 7 on 7 is: two defensive stops per half by our "D" and score every time on offense including XP's and you WIN.
Very pleased with the effort today. Kids were sore from spring football practice and they had to really fight through the aches and pains to get it done. Showed mental and physical toughness which is the VIKING WAY.

VFND,

Coach Poynter

CHANGE OF LOCATION FOR ROCKWALL POOL PLAY SATURDAY!

From Rockwall Head Football Coach: Weather has forced us to change our pool play sites for the Rockwall SQT on Saturday.
The grass field at RHS will be unplayable on Saturday.  In addition, the threat of storms and subsequent lightning delays on Saturday makes it a bad idea to stretch pool play out for an additional two hours if we consolidate down to two sites.

We will be moving Pool C (Arlington Lamar, Rowlett, Wylie East, ESD) to  Wylie East High School.

We will be moving Pool B (Poteet, Waxahachie, Grand Prairie, Sulphur Springs) to Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.

For Pool C at Wylie East, registration will be held on-site.  Please bring money, liability waivers, and team rosters directly to Wylie East High School.  This will save on excessive travel time for these teams.
Pool play times will be as originally planned.  An updated list of pools and sites ALONG WITH DIRECTIONS are attached as a PDF ON THE LAMAR 7 ON 7 HOME PAGE (upper right tab). Below are links for directions.

NOTE: THE TRIP IS NOW ABOUT AN HOUR AND INVOLVES SOME TOLLS ALONG THE WAY. WE NEED TO LEAVE LAMAR HS AT 6:50 AM SATURDAY MORNING!!

ROCKWALL POOL AND MAPS

In order to attach a PDF with the maps and pool information you need to go back to the 7 on 7 home page www.lamarvikings7on7.com and click on the icon on the top far right called "PDF". You can then print the information for that week (see Rockwall PDF). I will try to have the current week information up by Tuesday each week assuming I receive it from the tournament by then.

Rockwall State Qualifying Tournament

Per below from the Host HS (Rockwall) weather this week will dictate play. Fortunately we have been assigned to Wilkerson-Sanders (Pool "C" ) so we will play on field turf regardless of weather. It seats 8,300 so we should be able to fit our fans in the venueJ. The biggest difference will be how much LONGER the tournament will take IF the grass field over at RHS is eliminated due to weather. Attached is my “marked up” pool sheet; clean pool sheet; directional map to Wilkerson and direction map to Rockwall HS for semi-finals (may we need this map). Below is direction link from Lamar:

We will take the kids/parents etc. straight to Wilkerson. I will go over to RHS and register us and then join you. First game is not until 9:00 so there is no rush if we get away even a little after 7:00 am from Lamar. Nancy, we will see which playing schedule we are on to determine what time we will eat lunch-probably noon in either event.

CONDUCT AT STATE QUALIFIERS

On Saturday at a small school state qualifier, two teams got in to it complete with coaches and fans and it was a mess (police involved). Both teams disqualified including two time defending D-II champions Graham. Have not heard an official word but the rule is if two teams get in a fight they are DQ’d for the Day AND the Season including the state tournament (if they had already qualified).

I WENT OVER THIS CAREFULLY WITH THE KIDS YESTERDAY. POINTED OUT TO THEM AS THE ONLY STATE QUALIFIER EVERY YEAR THEY HAD A “BULLS EYE” ON THEIR BACKS AND WHAT A TRAGEDY IT WOULD BE FOR US TO LOSE THAT “ONE OF A KIND” QUALIFIER LABEL TO A FIGHT!!

Matt Stepp also tweeted that at least one of these teams did NOT have a school coach there as is required. Who knows if that would have mattered but it does not help that they broke two rules in terms of the ultimate punishment handed out..

From Old Coach web site:

PRINCETON - 7 on 7 State Qualifying got started today and the first DFW Division II Qualifier certainly had its fair share of excitement as Princeton and Celina punched their tickets to the 2015 7 on 7 State Tournament in College Station. The biggest story of the day may not involve the two qualified teams, instead the focus shifts to two time defending Division II champions Graham who along with Kaufman were disqualified from the tournament during the final round of pool play due to a bench clearing melee.

An official decision has yet to be handed down by the Texas State 7 on 7 Board of Directors on the status of Graham and Kaufman, but the fact that both teams were disqualified and not allowed to finish the tournament is not a good sign

Please take the time to read and download for reference the rules for 7 on 7. This will help us all understand the game better. You will note the highlighted areas in the rules are NEW for this year.

ALSO: As soon as I get the pool information I will forward along with where at the Rockwall HS campus we are playing-should receive today. First game will be at 9:00 am and we will depart the east parking lot at Lamar between 6:45 and 7:00 am.

Weather this weekend

Like all sports teams we are juggling our schedule around the weather. Right now the plan is to have a very short walk-through practice Saturday AFTER regular football. On Sunday we will have a regular 7 on 7 practice at 2:00 pm at Cravens. If lightning is in the area I will decide about 1:00 pm Sunday if we need to move the practice to an alternative location (1701 E. Lamar Blvd). Nancy Buechele will do her best to keep you posted. THE SUNDAY PRACTICE IS VERY IMPORTANT so try to have your son there. This will be our last practice before our first STATE QUALIFIER on Saturday May 23rd.

Welcome to the Lamar Varsity 2015 7 on 7 Blog

Greetings Lamar 7 on 7 Fans,

We are less than two weeks from our first state qualifying tournament on Saturday May 23rd at Rockwall HS. As a team we have a good handful of practices under our belts and we are looking forward to getting the 7 on 7 season started. Right now the guys are in spring football so we are having short "mental rep" practices after the Saturday spring practices for 15-20 minutes to keep them thinking about 7 on 7.

Please take the time to click on the email box to the right center of this page and register. By doing this you will receive an email reminder each time I have posted on the 7on7  blog site. Pretty soon Nancy Buechele will be up and running on a program known as "mail chimp" which will provide you almost instant email updates on things like practice changes or bad weather information etc. Be sure Nancy and I have "good" email addresses on team players and family so everyone that wants to be kept updated will be.

As you probably know the Vikings are the only team in Texas to qualify for the state tournament every season for 17 years. We are very proud of that accomplishment and that is our first and primary goal this season-to qualify for the 18th consecutive year and participate in the State 7 on 7 tournament in July in College Station. We need your support and my coaching staff (Steve, Lawrence, Harrell, Julian, Tanner and Elias) thanks you for the opportunity to coach your sons.
